Did She Just Say That?

She Threatened to Kick My Ass

A woman I had never met threatened to kick my ass. First encounter. Sporting event. My date mentioned a trip we had planned together, her mood shifted, and she looked directly at me and said:

“If you break up with him after this trip, I will kick your ass.”

I had nothing. I muttered something about having paid for my own ticket. Truly my finest moment.

My first reaction was offense. The polished kind, which for the record involves sitting up very straight and saying nothing, which I absolutely did, right after mentioning I paid for my own ticket. And before we made it to the parking lot, I had already decided I would probably never willingly spend time with her again. All before the car doors closed. I am a delight.

I laughed about it for three days. And then something shifted.

I started to actually look at what she had done. She watched her friend bring a new woman around. She sized up the situation with the clarity of someone who has been on this earth long enough to know how early relationships can end. And she said the quiet part out loud. Directly. To my face. No hedge, no softening, no “I’m just kidding” chaser.

She was protecting her friend. And she did it like someone who ran out of patience for social theater a long time ago and never looked back.

Here is the part that stopped me cold. I write for a brand built entirely around the woman who says what she thinks and does not spend one second waiting for the room to make her comfortable. She is literally the whole point. And I had spent three days planning to avoid her.

I had mistaken directness for rudeness. Certainty for aggression. I had almost exited a friendship before it started because she reminded me of who I have not yet fully let myself be. For the record: I grew up in a Midwest neighborhood full of boys. I tackled a few of them before I turned twelve. I was not afraid of this woman kicking my ass. I was afraid of becoming her.

The filter is not the goal. The woman on the other side of it is.

She is a whip-smart Texas woman in her 60s who got there already. Threatening to kick my ass was genuinely the nicest thing she could have done. It gave me pause and time to think.

Be a bitch boldly.

And if you need a little inspiration, these are my favorite AI ladies on Instagram.
