Backpacking is Back

While most of us would not want to go back to being nineteen, many people are re-visiting that youthful era of travel – backpacking and hostels. Part nostalgia and part self-discovery, this old school way of traveling is back with the midlife demographic. Times have changed with innovation, making this style of travel easier and safer for anyone of any age. When I backpacked in the nineties it was before cellphones, so I sought out internet cafés in each city to let those back home know I was still alive. My father sent money via Western Union and I carried a wad of traveler’s checks in my money belt. One of the best things of that era was keeping a travel journal, which I still have, and exchanging books with other travelers along the way, a tradition I hope still exists today.

Backpacking Essentials

Backpacks have come a long way, and many larger styles are now wheeled. If you’re seriously backpacking again, I say go for the best you can find, your back will thank you. My pick is the Osprey FairPoint Wheeled 27” Travel Pack which comes in Men’s and Women’s styles, with an optional integrated daypack.

Lululemon has some great travel items including daypacks to carry essentials for outings while you leave the bulk of your belongings behind for the day. My pick is the Everywhere Backpack 22L in Warm Ash Grey/Sheer Oak which is lightweight, waterproof and stylish. They also have a water-repellent Toiletry Bag that’s the good structured style, as well as packing cubes that are essential for backpackers with limited space.

A personal water bottle is definitely required, my pick is the Yeti Rambler Water Bottle.

Multigenerational Hostels

Hostels have, thankfully, come a long way and you’re very likely to find both young and older folks frequenting them. They now also appeal to families and ‘digital nomads’ working abroad and welcome guests of all ages and generations. Hostels are a great choice if you’re moving around every few days, are on a budget and are ok with communal areas, shared kitchens and semi-private bathrooms. While you can choose a private room, staying in the ‘dorm’ style accommodation and sharing breakfast with fellow travelers is half the fun. Do your research and read reviews for cleanliness, family/age-friendly and with private room options just in case. Avoid those with a party reputation or aversion to anyone over 40, unless you want to lose sleep and feel old.

If, like me, you still need some luxe, you can find some great options with modern design and welcome amenities, some that look as good as a 5-star hotel.

Websites like Hostelworld and Hostelz can help you customize your search and filters to find a hostel that’s right for you. If you’re new to hostels, more info and tips can be found here.
