Meet the artist Gary Holme
Gary Holme has one of the most diverse and eclectic careers in the North American visual arts scene. As an accomplished artist, published illustrator and cartoonist, he has spent his career weaving creativity with commercial success, from controversial art shows in Beijing to the podium at advertising award shows worldwide. Classically trained in drawing and painting in his youth, Holme’s recent work has become bolder and more emotionally resonant. He is more prolific and eclectic than ever, thriving in his sixth decade of painting and creation.
What is a “plein air” landscape painter?
When asked about his style he simply says, “Ultimately, I am a plein air landscape painter.”
“I like to transgress things and do experimental, messed-up, and crazy stuff now, but really at heart, I’m a painter. I’m inspired by a blank canvas. A blank sheet of beautiful paper. And my favorite genre is plein air landscapes. Plein air means painting in nature. Like the one shown above. This piece was created with oil pastel crayons, rather than the liquid form. I love this medium. It’s exciting to capture that fleeting moment in front of nature. It forces me to be present.”
