We often pass by playgrounds—those vibrant spaces filled with swings, slides, and laughter. For many, they evoke cherished memories of childhood or times spent with our own children. Traditionally associated with youth and freedom, these spaces symbolize uninhibited joy and exploration.

However, play isn’t just for kids. Engaging in playful activities remains vital throughout our lives, especially as we age. At RestlessUrban, we advocate for adults over 50 to rediscover the joy and benefits of play. Incorporating play into daily routines can enhance health, happiness, and overall wellbeing.

The new playgrounds: where lifestyle meets joy

Pickleball: a sport for all ages

Pickleball has rapidly gained popularity across various age groups. According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA), the sport experienced a 223.5% growth over three years in the United States, with 13.6 million people playing in 2023.  While often associated with older adults, recent data indicates that the average age of avid players is 34.8 years, with more than 70% between 18 and 44.  This demonstrates that pickleball’s appeal spans multiple generations, offering a fun and engaging way to stay active.

Dancing: a path to physical and mental health

Dancing offers numerous benefits for older adults, including improved muscular strength, balance, and cognitive function. A systematic review found that dance can significantly enhance aerobic power, lower body muscle endurance, strength, flexibility, agility, and gait.  Additionally, regular dancing has been linked to a reduced risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, attributed to the combination of physical activity, social interaction, and cognitive stimulation.

Creative pursuits: unlocking new passions

Engaging in creative activities such as painting, writing, or playing a musical instrument can provide a sense of accomplishment and joy. These pursuits stimulate the mind, encourage self-expression, and can lead to new social connections, all contributing to enhanced mental wellbeing.

Gaming: bridging generations

Video gaming is no longer confined to younger generations. Adults over 50 are increasingly embracing gaming to connect with family members and engage in mentally stimulating activities. This trend highlights the evolving nature of play and its capacity to bridge generational gaps.

Nature activities: reconnecting with the outdoors

Spending time in nature through activities like hiking, birdwatching, or gardening offers physical exercise and mental relaxation. These pursuits provide opportunities for mindfulness, reduce stress, and foster a deeper connection with the environment.

Play as a path to self-discovery

At this stage in life, many individuals contemplate their next steps, navigating transitions such as retirement, career changes, or shifts in family dynamics. Incorporating play into daily routines can facilitate self-discovery, resilience, and a renewed sense of purpose. Engaging in enjoyable activities fosters personal growth and enriches life experiences.

Intentional play: making time for joy

Balancing responsibilities can make it challenging to prioritize leisure activities. However, dedicating time to play is essential for overall wellbeing. Whether it’s joining a dance class, participating in a book club, or exploring new hobbies, intentional play rejuvenates the spirit and enhances quality of life.

Build your own wellbeing playground

Consider what activities bring you joy and fulfillment. Your personal playground might include:

  • Travel Adventures: Exploring new destinations and cultures.
  • Artistic Endeavors: Pursuing photography, crafting, or other creative arts.
  • Community Involvement: Volunteering or participating in local events.
  • Lifelong Learning: Enrolling in courses or workshops to acquire new skills.

By identifying and engaging in activities that resonate with you, you can cultivate a lifestyle rich in play and discovery.

Let’s talk about play

At RestlessUrban, we encourage open conversations about the role of play in our lives. Sharing experiences and ideas can inspire others to embrace joyful activities. We invite you to reflect on:

  • What new hobbies or activities have you explored recently?
  • How do you incorporate play into your daily routine?
  • In what ways has engaging in playful activities impacted your wellbeing?
  • By fostering a community that values play, we can collectively enhance our quality of life and wellbeing.

The swings are calling. It’s time to play.
